Alibaba Group Holding Ltd ($BABA) reported a mixed but telling quarter as it aggressively invests in AI and cloud infrastructure. While overall net profit plunged 75% year-over-year, revenue grew a solid 9%, fueled by a remarkable 45% surge in AI cloud and computing services to 48.44 billion yuan. This rapid growth highlights Alibaba’s strategic pivot toward becoming a major AI and cloud player, with AI-related products now generating an annual revenue run rate exceeding 49.5 billion yuan and accounting for 35% of external cloud revenue. CEO Yongming Wu emphasized AI as the company’s “most certain growth engine,” and management reiterated a long-term goal of reaching 100 billion yuan in external cloud revenue by 2030 with a target gross margin of 20%.
However, this expansion comes at a steep cost. Capital expenditures soared 75% to 67.68 billion yuan as Alibaba poured funds into chip purchases and data center buildouts, burning through roughly half of its planned 380 billion yuan AI infrastructure budget through 2029. This heavy spending contributed to a free cash flow outflow of 44.7 billion yuan and adjusted earnings per share missing estimates by about 19%. Additionally, a 550 million euro fine from the European Commission related to AliExpress added to the financial headwinds. Meanwhile, Alibaba’s core domestic e-commerce segment faced an 8% revenue decline amid a sluggish Chinese economy and stiff competition, underscoring the challenges in its traditional business.
On the innovation front, Alibaba’s Alipay launched a new AI-powered merchant platform designed to automate storefront operations, customer engagement, and order management. This move integrates AI deeper into Alibaba’s commerce ecosystem, potentially enhancing merchant efficiency and creating new revenue streams. The company’s reorganization into four distinct units—e-commerce, cloud and computing, AI applications, and others—reflects its broad AI ambitions across multiple layers of its business.
Looking ahead, Alibaba’s management remains confident that the AI and cloud investments will drive sustained high growth and improving profitability, with expectations for EBITDA margins to steadily expand. The key for investors will be watching how effectively Alibaba converts its AI momentum into cash flow and how quickly its merchant AI platform gains traction in upcoming earnings reports. For now, Alibaba’s story is one of balancing short-term profit pressures against a bold, long-term bet on AI and cloud as the future engines of growth.
Markets will reopen later today at 9:30 AM ET.
