Advanced Micro Devices Inc. ($AMD) reported a blockbuster quarter with revenue soaring 50% year-over-year to a record $11.54 billion, driven largely by its booming Data Center segment. This unit more than doubled its sales to $6.7 billion, fueled by strong demand for EPYC CPUs and Instinct AI accelerators, which now represent 58% of total revenue. The Client division also showed solid growth with a 23% revenue increase, though the Gaming segment struggled, declining 31% amid cooling semi-custom demand. AMD is aggressively investing in its AI future, boosting R&D spending by 33% to $2.53 billion, while its GAAP operating margin rebounded to 17% after last year’s export-control-related setbacks.
Despite these impressive results and a confident outlook projecting about $13 billion in revenue for Q3, AMD’s stock fell 6.9% on August 5th. The market reaction reflects the high bar set by investor expectations for AI leaders, with the stock trading nearly double its estimated fair value. Investors are clearly pricing in years of AI dominance, so even record-breaking quarters can trigger profit-taking. The upcoming quarter will be critical, as AMD aims for a further 12.7% sequential revenue increase and stable gross margins near 56%, while managing a rising inventory level of $8.47 billion. Meanwhile, comments from Elon Musk about SpaceX exclusively using Nvidia chips added pressure on AMD shares, contributing to the stock’s decline in a mixed market environment.
U.S. markets are currently closed and will reopen tomorrow at 9:30 AM ET.
