Netlist Inc. $NLST saw its shares jump 18% following a landmark agreement with Micron Technology $MU, under which Micron will pay $600 million over five years for a license to Netlist’s patent portfolio covering server DIMMs and high-bandwidth memory technologies. This deal not only settles all ongoing legal disputes between the two companies but also includes quarterly payments of $30 million starting in Q4 2026 through Q3 2031. Additionally, Micron has invested $1 million to acquire 10 million shares of Netlist, with a structured release of these shares over five years, signaling a deepening strategic relationship.
Earlier in September, Netlist had filed a patent infringement complaint against Micron and major tech firms like Google, Nvidia, and Broadcom, accusing them of using its patented high-bandwidth memory technology in AI computing applications. The recent licensing agreement effectively resolves these disputes, validating the value of Netlist’s intellectual property in the rapidly evolving AI memory market.
Netlist’s strong momentum is further supported by its impressive financial performance in the first half of 2026, with revenues tripling year-over-year to $214.7 million and gross profit soaring over 1,500%. Much of this growth stems from reselling hard-to-source DRAM products amid constrained supply, alongside rising sales of its proprietary Lightning line of overclocked DDR5 RDIMM and UDIMM memory modules. The company is also advancing next-generation products like CXL NVvault and MRDIMM, which are gaining traction with major OEMs, hyperscalers, and SoC vendors.
Financially, Netlist ended Q2 2026 with a solid cash position of $40.7 million and minimal debt, backed by access to additional credit lines and equity financing. This liquidity underpins ongoing investments in research, development, and intellectual property protection. The recent five-year strategic alliance with Samsung, involving cross-licensing and supply agreements, complements the Micron deal and strengthens Netlist’s positioning in a competitive memory market dominated by larger players.
As the memory industry faces persistent supply constraints and growing AI-driven demand, Netlist’s combination of patent licensing, product innovation, and strategic partnerships places it at an interesting crossroads. While competition remains fierce, these developments mark a significant step in transforming legal battles into collaborative growth opportunities.
U.S. markets are currently closed and will reopen later today at 9:30 AM ET.
