Nvidia Corporation ($NVDA) is making a massive push into AI infrastructure with a groundbreaking $105 billion financing deal to support the construction of an 8-gigawatt data center campus in Ohio, developed by SB Energy and leased to OpenAI for 20 years. This PORTS-Pike Technology Campus will initially offer 4.25 gigawatts of computing power, with plans to expand by an additional 3.75 gigawatts. Nvidia’s GPUs will power the entire facility, potentially deploying around 1.5 million chips, translating into tens of billions in revenue per generation through 2030. CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that this investment is a strategic move to secure long-term capacity aligned with customer demand, rather than circular investing, as Nvidia will only cover parts of lease and power costs.
Alongside this, Nvidia is reportedly negotiating a $3 billion direct investment in SB Energy, further deepening its financial involvement in the data center project. This move signals Nvidia’s evolving role from chip supplier to a key financier of AI infrastructure, which could bolster demand for its hardware but also raises its financial exposure to the buildout. SB Energy is eyeing an IPO soon, potentially raising $5 billion, with Nvidia’s investment partly contingent on this public offering.
Meanwhile, Renaissance Technologies, a leading quantitative hedge fund, has significantly increased its stake in Nvidia during Q2 2026, boosting shares from 2.53 million to 7.09 million. Nvidia now represents about 2% of Renaissance’s $72.6 billion equity portfolio, highlighting strong institutional confidence. The fund’s quant rating for Nvidia stands at a moderate “hold,” reflecting balanced market sentiment amid Nvidia’s aggressive expansion and financing strategies.
On the market front, Nvidia shares rose nearly 1% today, buoyed by the news of its massive credit and compute financing for OpenAI’s Ohio data center. This momentum helped the Nasdaq maintain a slight gain despite broader market pressures. The company’s strategic investments and partnerships continue to position it at the forefront of AI-driven growth, even as hyperscalers face financial challenges from upfront infrastructure spending.
