Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ($SPCX) is making significant strides in expanding its AI computing capabilities, with CEO Elon Musk revealing plans to more than double the number of Nvidia chips powering its xAI Colossus 2 cluster by the end of 2026. Currently equipped with 110,000 GB200 and 440,000 GB300 Nvidia chips, the Memphis-based facility is set to add an additional 660,000 GB300 chips in stages through November and potentially late December, aiming for a total of 1 million GPUs by year-end. This aggressive buildout highlights SpaceX’s push to scale AI infrastructure alongside its aerospace ventures.
On the space front, SpaceX secured a $946 million NASA contract extension to continue crewed missions to the International Space Station through 2030, bringing its total NASA contract value close to $6 billion. This extension provides short-term certainty for crew transportation but underscores ongoing challenges, as Boeing’s Starliner remains uncertified for crewed flights until at least 2027, and SpaceX plans to retire its Crew Dragon spacecraft by 2030—the same year the ISS is slated for retirement. This timing leaves questions about future redundancy and crew access beyond the next several years.
Meanwhile, $SPCX shares have faced pressure since their June IPO, sliding from a peak of $201.80 to lower levels over the summer, contrasting with gains seen by competitors like Meta Platforms. Investors are weighing SpaceX’s ambitious AI and space initiatives against near-term market volatility and competitive pressures, including from Amazon’s growing but still lagging space and satellite internet efforts.
Markets will reopen later today at 9:30 AM ET, where $SPCX’s developments in AI and NASA contracts will likely remain key focal points for investors.
