Yelp Inc. ($YELP) delivered a solid second-quarter performance, surpassing Wall Street’s revenue and earnings expectations despite ongoing headwinds in its core advertising business. The company reported revenue of $375.5 million, a 1.4% increase year-over-year and beating estimates by 2.3%. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.95, well above the anticipated $0.78, while adjusted EBITDA reached $91.43 million, reflecting a strong 23.4% beat. These results were driven primarily by rapid growth in Yelp’s AI-powered offerings, including Yelp Host and Hatch, as well as expanding data licensing partnerships. CEO Jeremy Stoppelman emphasized that enhancements in AI tools boosted consumer engagement and contributed to higher project submissions in the Services category, helping offset softness in traditional ad revenues.
$YELP “Hatch” vs $META “Hatch”
For those tracking Yelp's assets, it is worth clarifying a common point of confusion surrounding recent headlines. The business-to-business AI platform that Yelp acquired for 300 million dollars in January remains a wholly owned subsidiary and is completely unrelated to Meta's upcoming consumer assistant of the same name. Meta's Hatch is simply an internal code name for a new consumer web agent. Interestingly, Meta's product is explicitly designed to browse outside web services, and internal testing has included automating tasks right on Yelp's platform.
This cross-web scraping aligns with what we are seeing on the ground, as our network has seen a huge increase in crawls around the clock over the last month from meta. and our access logs indicate that META seems to be including data from smaller networks as well.
Advertising revenue showed mixed trends, with a 3% year-over-year decline to $342.5 million. While Services advertising remained stable, Restaurants, Retail & Other advertising fell 10%, impacted by weaker ad clicks and lower revenue per location. Despite these challenges, Yelp’s total paying advertising locations only dipped slightly by 1%. Management highlighted improving sequential trends in ad metrics and noted that consumer traffic gains, supported by increased app installs and page views, provided a positive tailwind.
Yelp’s strategic investments in AI are central to its growth outlook. Hatch, the company’s AI voice and lead-management platform, saw annual run rate revenues climb 59% year-over-year to $35 million as of June, with call volumes on Yelp Host tripling to a 2.4 million annual run rate. CFO David Schwarzbach acknowledged that these investments are pressuring near-term margins, with operating margin down to 11.6% from 14.4% a year ago, but expressed confidence that AI-driven efficiencies will support profitability over time. The company reaffirmed its full-year revenue guidance of approximately $1.47 billion and EBITDA guidance of $320 million, aligning with analyst expectations.
On the governance front, recent reports highlighted how Max Levchin, former chairman of Yelp’s board, leveraged a self-directed Roth IRA to accumulate roughly $95 million in pre-IPO Yelp shares tax-free, illustrating a sophisticated retirement strategy that benefits from tax-free growth and withdrawals under current rules. This story underscores the potential advantages of self-directed retirement accounts for investors with access to early-stage equity opportunities.
Looking ahead, Yelp’s focus remains on scaling its AI-driven products and expanding licensing partnerships to fuel growth beyond traditional advertising, positioning the company to navigate a challenging local business environment while capitalizing on emerging technology trends.
