Shares of Summit Therapeutics $smmt surged sharply, gaining around 17-22% in premarket trading on Tuesday following a major $2 billion equity investment from AstraZeneca $azn. This strategic deal grants AstraZeneca roughly a 12% stake in Summit through preferred shares convertible into common stock at about $18.35 per share, representing a premium over recent prices. The investment significantly strengthens Summit’s financial position, nearly tripling its cash reserves and providing greater flexibility to advance its lead cancer drug, ivonescimab, which is already approved in China and under FDA review in the U.S.
Beyond the capital infusion, the partnership includes clinical collaborations to test ivonescimab in combination with AstraZeneca’s Claudin 18.2-targeting antibody-drug conjugate, sonesitatug vedotin, in gastrointestinal cancers. Both companies will share trial costs while retaining rights to their respective drugs. Additionally, a broader global development program is planned to explore ivonescimab alongside multiple AstraZeneca oncology medicines, signaling a deepening alliance in cancer treatment innovation. This deal not only validates Summit’s pipeline but also aligns with AstraZeneca’s expanding antibody-drug conjugate portfolio, marking a significant milestone for both firms as they prepare to initiate combination clinical studies imminently.
U.S. markets are currently closed and will reopen tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM ET.
